PE 2018: Temporal Smoothing Option

INTRODUCTION

Two previous blog posts have focused on the use of "Auto Levels with its Temporal Smoothing option" in Premiere Elements versions 4 through 2018.

PE 15: Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing (April 4, 2017)

It is important to review details of these two blog posts to obtain background information for what is to follow.

ISSUE

Besides Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing, a Temporal Smoothing option does exist for certain other Premiere Elements "Auto" Adjust and fx Effects choices. In reviewing the details of a Temporal Smoothing option in other than Auto Levels, further interest in this matter was triggered when a  Premiere Elements 15 Temporal Smoothing (seconds) range appeared to be different than that found in Premiere Elements 2018. Details to follow.

PREMIERE ELEMENTS 2018 TEMPORAL SMOOTHING OPTION OBSERVATIONS
(Keys to Temporal Smoothing: "Auto" active and then a Temporal Smoothing setting greater than 0.)

Adjustments
(See FIX/Adjust tab at top of vertical column at right of  Expert workspace)

Color Panel
Auto Color tab
(tab clicked to select this choice required for Temporal Smoothing availability; Auto Color tab turned gray when selected)
  • No Temporal Smoothing setting was found anywhere in the Color Panel in the Fix/Adjust area.
  • Instead, setting for Temporal Smoothing (range 0 to 10 seconds) was available using the Timeline video clip rubberband once the video clip's title was changed from the default Rubberband:Opacity:Opacity to Rubberband:Auto Color:Temporal Smoothing (seconds).
Lighting Panel
Auto Levels tab and Auto Contrast tab
(here a tab must be clicked on for Temporal Smoothing availability; the Auto Levels tab and/or Auto Contrast tab turned gray when selected.)
  • No Temporal Smoothing setting was found anywhere in the Lighting Panel in the Fix/Adjust area.
  • Instead, setting for Temporal Smoothing (range 0 to 10 seconds) was available using the Timeline video clip rubberband once the video clip's title was changed from the default Rubberband:Opacity:Opacity to Rubberband:Auto Levels:Temporal Smoothing (seconds) or Rubberband:Auto Contrast:Temporal Smoothing (seconds). Note if both Auto Levels and Auto Contrast tabs were selected (gray) at the same time, the Temporal Smoothing rubberband setting for one was independent of the other.

fx Effects
(See EDIT/Apply Effects tab (fx) in the vertical column to the right of the Expert workspace)

EDIT/Apply Effects tab (fx)
Advanced Adjustments category
Shadow/Highlight choice

  • Application of Shadow/Highlight to the Timeline clip triggered the opening of the EDIT/Applied Effects Palette which contained the Shadow/Highlight panel which contained a Temporal Smoothing option (range 0.00 to 10.00 seconds) which was active only when there was a check mark placed next to "Auto Amounts" in that Shadow/Highlight panel.
  • The Temporal Smoothing setting could be done in the opened Shadow/Highlight panel using the Temporal Smoothing slider there or using the Timeline video clip rubberband once the video clip's title was changed from the default Rubberband:Opacity:Opacity to Rubberband:Shadow/Highlight:Temporal Smoothing (seconds). Changing Temporal Smoothing setting in Shadow/Highlight panel automatically changed rubberband setting to a corresponding value.

PREMIERE ELEMENTS 2018 TEMPORAL SMOOTHING OPTION COMPARED TO TEMPORAL SMOOTHING OPTION FOUND IN EARLIER VERSIONS

With the following exceptions, the Temporal Smoothing option details given in the previous section were also applicable to Premiere Elements 11 through 2018.
  • The Shadow/Highlight Temporal Smoothing option range found in Premiere Elements 14 and 15 was 0.00 to 1.00, not the 0.00 to 10.00 found in versions 11, 12, 13, and 2018.
  • Premiere Elements 14, 13, 12, and 11 Expert workspace has Adjust and Applied Effects tabs in vertical bar at right of Expert workspace and fx Effects in horizontal bar at bottom of the Expert workspace. In contrast, 15 and 2018 have Adjust, Applied Effects, and fx Effects tabs all in the vertical bar at the right of the Expert workspace.
  • In Premiere Elements 11 and 12, Applied Effects palette did not open automatically after applying Shadow/Highlight effect using Apply Effects (fx Effects); whereas, in Premiere Elements 13, 14, 15, and 2018, it did.
  • Video clip title description for rubberband property did not include the word Rubberband for 13, 12, and 11; whereas as it did for 14, 15, and 2018.
The same Temporal Smoothing opportunities (for Auto Color, Auto Contrast, Auto Levels, and Shadow/Highlight are available in Premiere Elements earlier than 11, but paths to them differ due to major workspace changes that took place in 11 through 2018 versions. Refer to detailed Premiere Elements 10 Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing found HERE. The following is a brief overview of the Premiere Elements 4 through 10 Temporal Smoothing opportunities for Auto Levels, Auto Contrast, Auto Color, and Shadow Highlight.

For Premiere Elements 4 through 10, Auto Color, Auto Levels, Auto Contrast, and Shadow Highlight tabs are all listed in the Adjust category found in the path Timeline workspace/Edit Header/fx Effects/Video Effects/Adjust. After the effect was dragged from there into the video clip, the effect's Properties palette contained a panel for the effect dragged into it. The effect's opened panel contained a slider for the setting Temporal Smoothing (seconds) with range of 0.00 to 10.00. Changing Temporal Smoothing slider setting in Properties area automatically changed the video clip's Temporal Smoothing rubberband setting to a corresponding value. Reminder: to view the rubberband specific to the effect of interest, the Timeline video clip's video clip's title needed to be changed from the default Opacity to name Auto Color:Temporal Smoothing (seconds) or Auto Contrast:Temporal Smoothing (seconds) or Auto Level: Temporal Smoothing (seconds) or Shadow Highlight:Temporal Smoothing (seconds). Reminder: the Properties palette's Shadow/Highlight Temporal Smoothing slider was active only when there was a check mark placed next to "Auto Amounts" in that Shadow/Highlight opened panel.

COMMENTARY

Observations were made using Premiere Elements 4 through 2018 on Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit. It is not understood why Premiere Elements 14 and 15 Shadow/Highlight Temporal Smoothing range (0.00 to 1.00) was different from that (0.00 to 10.00) found in other Premiere Elements versions.

As always, work in progress to confirm accuracy and update when updates become available.
