PE 2018: More Preroll and Postroll Options Interpreted

INTRODUCTION

The Preroll and Postroll options for Premiere Elements 12/12.1 and earlier are covered in my September 6, 2014 blog post titled "PE: Preroll and Postroll Options Interpreted". See HERE.
That September 6, 2014 blog addressed that topic related to Premiere Elements 12/12.1 and earlier and begins
INTRODUCTION

The Preroll and Postroll options can be found in Premiere Elements*

  • Edit Menu/Preferences/General - Preroll and Postroll
  • Titler/Roll and Crawl Options - Preroll and Postroll
  • Capture Window Device Control - Preroll Only
ISSUE

Setting these options in any one of the above areas does not appear to change the settings in the other two. What are these options supposed to do and how to get them to do it?

PRESENT ISSUE

Are the Preroll and Postroll options and interpretations reported in the 2014 blog the same for versions of Premiere Elements that came after version 12/12.1? Update of topic follows below for Premiere Elements 2018, 15, 14/14.1, and 13/13.1.

OBSERVATIONS

Edit Menu/Preferences/General
Preroll and Postroll

Involvement: Video Track Playback and Preview Windows Trimming

The details given for Premiere Elements 12/12.1 and earlier in the 2014 testing are essentially the same as those observed for Premiere Elements 2018, 15, 14/14.1, and 13/13.1 in today's study.* Important to refer to 2014 details. Some key aspects to point to:
  • Preroll and Postroll set in the project's Edit Menu/Preferences/General, for all intents and purposes, are targeted at Preview Window and the trim in the Preview Window Timeline rather than clip in Timeline Video Track of the Timeline Mode of that project.
  • Use of Ctrl+Alt/space bar in the project's Timeline or Preview Window Timeline was only way found to show the effect of  any Preroll and/or Postroll that were set in the project's Edit Menu/Preferences/General.

Titler/Roll and Crawl Options
Preroll and Postroll

Involvement: Titler, Roll and Crawl Titles

The details given for Premiere Elements 12/12.1 and earlier in the 2014 testing are essentially the same as those observed for Premiere Elements 2018, 15, 14/14.1, 13/13.1 in today's study. Important to refer to 2014 details as well as the Adobe document titled Creating Titles and dated July 28, 2017.

Some Reminders include:

NOTE 1.
Two possible routes to creating a roll or crawl title in the project's Titler are:
A. Text Menu/New Title/Default Title, followed by subsequent calling up of the Roll Crawl Options dialog in that opened Titler using Text Menu/"Roll/Crawl Options" and setting Title Type = Roll or Crawl in place of Title Type = Still in the Roll/Crawl Options dialog.
or
B. Text Menu/New Title/Default Roll or Default Crawl. If necessary for edit of the Roll or Crawl, the Roll Crawl Options dialog can be called up in the opened Titler using Text Menu/"Roll/Crawl Options". In the case of the 1B note, when the Roll/Crawl Options dialog was opened for the first time, the default settings were found as shown in Figure 1 for Roll and Figure Figure 2 for Crawl.

Figure 1. Premiere Elements 2018. Introductory Roll/Crawl Options Dialog Settings Found When Rolling Title Created Via Text Menu/New Text/Default Roll.

Figure 2. Premiere Elements 2018. Introductory Roll/Crawl Options Dialog Settings Found When Crawling Title Created Via Text Menu/New Text/Default Roll.

Contrast the Roll/Crawl Options dialog initial settings associated with using different route to a roll or crawl title. See Figure 1 and 2 above for routes Text Menu/New Text/Default Roll and Text Menu/New Text/Default Crawl respectively. For route Text Menu/New Text/Default Still refer to Figure 1 and 2 in the 2014 work found HERE which shows

Title Type = Still (User had to change it to Roll or Crawl)
Direction = N/A
Timing (Frames) = no check mark next to Start Off Screen or End Off Screen
Preroll = 0
Ease-In = 0
Ease-Out = 0
Postroll = 0

NOTE 2.
Preroll is disabled when Start Off Screen is selected; Postroll is disabled when End Off Screen is selected.

NOTE 3.
Different scenarios are possible when creating roll or crawl titles in the opened Titler and trying to use Preroll and/or Postroll as alternatives for Start Off Screen and/or End Off Screen. Manual adjustment of the title in the Titler window may be necessary depending on options selected in the Roll/Crawl Options dialog.

NOTE 4.
The Timeline timecode (located above the Timeline tracks area and below the monitor) can be set to Frames instead of Drop-Down Timecode 00;00;00;00 (hours;minutes;seconds;frames) either
A. Edit Menu/Project Settings/General and its Display Format = Frames
or
B. In the Timeline track workspace, holding down the Ctrl key and clicking the Timeline timecode display. To revert to Timeline timecode Drop-Down Timecode, repeating the Ctrl hold down and clicking on Timeline timecode display.

Edit Menu/Preferences/Device Control
Preroll Only

Involvement: DV HDV Capture Firewire

DV and HDV Capture Firewire were removed from Premiere Elements 13/13.1 through 2018  accompanied by their association with the Preroll found in Device Control in Edit Menu/Preferences/Device Control.

The Device Control with its Preroll setting did remain in Edit Menu/Preferences in versions 13/13.1 and 14/14.1, and it appeared to be associated with the Add Media/Webcam or WDM Capture Window settings. Although Premiere Elements 15 and 2018 were released with Add Media/Webcam or WDM, Edit Menu/Preferences/Device Control was gone.

COMMENTARY

As always, in progress is double checking accuracy of information obtained and updating/clarifying as needed.

________________________________________________________________________________
*The following unexpected and unexplained behavior of Premiere Elements Windows was encountered for only the first title created in Titler of a project. The behavior described below was observed for Premiere Elements 2018, 15, 14/14.1, 13/13.1, and 12/12.1 and was not seen in versions 11 and earlier.
  • If Text Menu/New Title/Default Title, the Titler opened and there was a presence of the title in the opened Titler as well as in the project's Timeline. But, if Text Menu/New Title/Default Roll or Default Crawl, the Titler did not open but there was a presence of the title in the project's Timeline. The Timeline title had to be double clicked to open the project's Titler.
  • If that first title was created alternatively using ADD/Add Text located in the workspace's right vertical tool bar and the title dragged to the Timeline video track, the Titler also opened for Default Text, but not for Default Roll or Default Crawl which needed double clicking of Timeline file to open the project's Titler.
