0002. Premiere Elements 12 fx Effects/Film Looks: Designed In Or Unintended Glitches?

In Premiere Elements 11, the Film Look is applied to the whole clip by dragging the Film Look into the clip image in the Edit Mode monitor or into the clip on the Timeline. As a consequence, the effects that went into creating a particular Film Look are found in panel(s) in Applied Effects/Applied Effects Palette/ where the effects can be adjusted.

Now in Premiere Elements 12, the Film Look can be applied to the whole clip or part of the clip via the New Adjustment Layer feature. But, here is the point of attention.

If the Film Look is dragged into image in the Edit Mode Monitor, then a pop appears wanting an Yes or No answer to "Do you want to apply this effect to your entire movie?"

Figure 1. Premiere Elements 12. Film Look Message When Dragging Film Look Into Clip Image In Edit Mode Monitor.

If the answer is No, the the Film Look is applied to the Timeline clip selected, and the panels for the associated effects that went into the Film Look are found in the Applied Effects Palette.  There is no New Adjustment Layer in Project Assets or elsewhere. And, if an additional clip is dragged to the Timeline, it is unaffected by the Film Look applied to other clip(s).

But, if the answer is Yes to the message, the New Adjustment Layer with all its perks for selective application of the look to the clip on Video 1 appears, but this Adjustment Layer is automatically placed on Video 4 or above. The duration of this New Adjustment Layer automatically adjusts to cover additional clips added to that Timeline after the initial application of the look to a particular clip on that Timeline. Remember, the Yes is to "...effect to your entire movie".

And, each time a New Adjustment Layer is used in response to Yes, a thumbnail for the Adjustment Layer is seen in Project Assets. But, that thumbnail is not presenting with the effect(s) applied to it. It is blank. But, if this Adjustment Layer is dragged from Project Assets to the Timeline, an effect (Film Look or other) can be applied to it and the Adjustment Layer can be placed on any track over a clip to give the clip the effect. In this regard, also note Timeline Menu/New Adjustment Layer. More on this New Adjustment Layer at another time.
(I have described these Adjustment Layers previously as Effects Mask on steroids.)

If the Film Look is dragged into clip on the Timeline instead of into the image in the Edit Mode Monitor, then no "Apply Effects" pop up appears with the choices of Yes or No to the question
"Do you want to apply this effect to your entire movie?" What results is similar to what is obtained by selecting No to that "Apply Effects" pop up when it appears after the Film Look is dragged into the image in the Edit Mode monitor.

The 4 new Film Looks in Premiere Elements 12 drew attention to Film Looks in general. These 4 new Film Looks and the effects used for the looks are:
  • Comic (NewBlue Cartoonr Plus)
  • Cross Process (Split Tone)
  • Trinity (Split Tone and Three-Way Color Corrector)
  • Yesteryear (Split Tone)

0003. Premiere Elements 12 Audio Tab/Music Score Issues
  • The Music Scores under the Audio Tab have file extension sbsc, representing an "Adobe Soundbooth Score Document", instead of .wav as seen in prior Premiere Elements versions for SmartSound soundtracks"
  • A Music Scores' soundtrack contribution to the Copied Folder of an archived project is huge. Compare the Copied Folder contents when the project was archived in Premiere Elements 12 with only one asset, that being a soundtrack in the Soundtrack, either Premiere Elements 12 Audio's Music Score/Ambient/Aura, SmartSound Soundtrack Bach Guitar from Premiere Elements 11, or Sleep Away.mp3 from Windows 7 64 bit music sample.

0004. More Premiere Elements 12 Audio Tab/Music Score Considerations

Some major differences between Premiere Elements 11 Music Tab/Use SmartSound and Premiere Elements 12 Audio Tab/Music Score appear to be
  • Although both involve the SmartSound concept of maintaining music arrangement while changing soundtrack duration, the Premiere Elements 12 files do not carry the SmartSound or Sonicfire Pro name.
  • The SmartSound/Sonicfire Pro 5 - ET soundtracks available in Premiere Elements 11 are in .wav format, but the Music Score soundtracks in version 12 are .sbsc which is said to represent an Adobe Soundbooth Score Document (please refer to entry 0003 in this Daily Discoveries blog for the file types that are found in the Copied Folder when Premiere Elements 12 project with one of these .sbsc soundtracks is project archived.)
  • Whereas the Premiere Elements 11 SmartSound/Sonicfire Pro 5 - ET .wav soundtracks can be used in Premiere Elements 12 and other versions of Premiere Elements, the Premiere Elements 12 .sbsc cannot be used in other than version 12.
  • Whereas Premiere Elements 11 Project Assets contains a thumbnail for the SmartSound/Sonicfire Pro 5 - ET soundtrack in use on the Timeline, there is no thumbnail for the Premiere Elements 12 Music Score soundtrack in Project Assets when it is in use on the Timeline.
  • The duration of the Music Score soundtrack is not the same for each choice. Duration adjustments are made at the Timeline level; whereas, with Premiere Elements 11, soundtrack could be set at wanted duration in the SmartSound/Sonicfire Pro 5 - ET workspace before hitting the Send button to get the soundtrack into the Premiere Elements 11 Timeline.
Additional observations and findings from initial explorations of Audio Tab/Music Score are described in what follows.

In Premiere Elements 12, Audio Tab was clicked to open to choice of Music Score - Ambient and Aura soundtrack (.sbsc) which requires download before use. If the soundtrack is dragged from the Audio Tab area to the Edit Mode monitor, the file automatically goes to the Soundtrack in Expert and Audio Bar in Quick. If the file is dragged directly to the Timeline, it can be placed on any of the audio tracks (Audio, Narration, Soundtrack). Remember that audio placed on Audio 1 and that type of track cannot be seen in Quick. The .sbsc soundtrack is never seen in the Expert Project Assets. A copy of the used .sbsc file can be found in Documents\Adobe\Premiere Elements\12\Score Files (Windows 7 or 8 64 bit).

When the file is dragged to one of the audio tracks (Audio, Narration, Soundtrack), the Creating Score Dialog appears showing generating progress, followed by automatic placement of the soundtrack at the site to which it was dragged and a pop up of Score Property dialog which offers Preview, Intensity adjust (from Mellow to Intense) and a box to check for "Fit Entire Video". The "Fit Entire Video" option is grayed out unless there is a difference between the duration of the video and audio on the Timeline. The Timeline soundtrack can be double clicked to bring up the Score Property dialog if it  needed again. See Figure 1.

Figure 1. Premiere Elements 12. Audio Tab/Music Score Score Property Dialog.

Double clicking the file on the Timeline will always bring up the Score Property dialog whatever audio track the file is on. But the Score Property dialog pops up automatically only when the file is dragged to an audio track, not when the file is dragged into the Edit Mode monitor.

Premiere Elements 12 Properties describes this .sbsc file as Type = Regenerative Audio Score, 48000 Hz, Stereo.

Studies are being done with Premiere Elements 12 tryout on Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit. Initial studies with Premiere Elements 12 tryout on Windows 8 64 bit ran into a problem of many missing Music Score and Sound Effects major categories and soundtracks/sound effects. The problem resolved itself within 24 hours. No why found.

0005. Advanced Button/Video Tab/Frame Rate Customization Flaw in New Publish+Share/Computer/XAVC-S

The new XAVC-S choice under Publish+Share/Computer comes with 4 presets. They are
  • MP4 - H.264 3840 x 2160 23.976p 30 Mbps
  • MP4 - H.264 3840 x 2160 25p 30 Mbps
  • MP4 - H.264 3840 x 2160 29.97p 200 Mbps
  • MP4 - H.264 3840 x 2160 29.97p 30 Mbps
There is an Advanced Button/Video Tab and Audio Tab under each of these presets. Provided the Video Tab's Frame Rate field entry does not go above 30 frames per second, no problem. But, if a Frame Rate above 30 frames per second is selected from the list that goes from 10 to 60 frames per second, an error message as seen in Figure 1 of this 0005 entry.

Figure 1. Publish+Share/Computer/XAVC-S Advance Tab/Video Tab Frame Rate Field Error Message.

The error message's option to "increase the Profile and Level and try again" is not possible because the Profile is already set at High (its maximum) and Level is already set at 5.1 (its maximum). No provision appears to have been made in Profile and Level to accommodate this resolution which exceeds 1920 x 1080.

The Sony profile for XAVC-S has been found, but the profile found does not include the expected frames rate that are written into this format. So, at this time, it is not known whether frame rates above 30 frames per second are part of the XAVC-S profile.

More work needs to be done on XAVC-S exporting as well as importing. It is unknown at this time whether the actual use of XAVC-S files and XAVC-S project preset allow for "more" when the file is exported with one of the XAVC-S export presets.

0006. Project Settings Related to Import of XAVC-S Files

Premiere Elements 12 new project presets are those for the import of XAVC-S files (3840 x 2160 pixels). These files appear to have an .mp4 wrapper. The choices in the new project dialog are

NTSC/AVCHD
QFHD 16 x 9 23.976
QFHD 16 x 9 29.97
QFHD 16 x 9 59.94

PAL/AVCHD
QFHD 16 x 9 25
QFHD 16 x 9 50

It is interesting to note that, if the new project dialog setting is verified under Edit Menu/Project Settings/General, the Editing Mode = RED Cinema, Timebase = frame rate corresponding to the frame rate in the preset name, and Frame Size = frame size corresponding to the frame size in the preset name.

0007. Publish+Share/Computer/Image - Preset "JPEG - PAL SD" ISSUE

Premiere Elements 12 Publish+Share/Computer/Image has 4 presets
JPEG - HD 1440 x 1080
JPEG - HD 1920 x 1080
JPEG - NTSC SD
JPEG - PAL SD

The problem seems to be with the JPEG-PAL SD preset whose default is set at 720 x 480 instead of 720 x 576. This can be seen at the level of the Image dialog level as well as under the preset's Advanced Button/Video Tab. Although the Advanced Button/Video Tab shows the NTSC frame rate of 720 x 480 instead of the PAL one, the Aspect is set for the PAL Aspect of D1/DV PAL (1.0940). See Figure 1 of this entry 0007.

Figure 1. Premiere Elements 12. Publish+Share/Computer/Image - Preset JPEG - PAL SD Default Setting Issue.

This information will be verified and updated once a switch has been made from the Premiere Elements 12 tryout to the purchased program which is waiting to be installed.

0008. Help Menu/Deactivate Change

The Help Menu/Deactivate seen in Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1, 9.0/9.0.1. 10, and 11 is now replaced in Premiere Elements 12 with Help Menu/Sign Out. Refer to Figure 1 in this 0008 Daily Discovery.

Figure 1. Premiere Elements 12's New Look For Program Deactivation Within Project's Help Menu/Sign Out.

Best do the Help Menu/Sign Out in the opened project to deactivate the program, close the project/ program, and then do the program uninstall via the usual Control Panel route.

Any problems with "Serial Number Issues, Activating Product", a great resource is Adobe Chat via the following link
http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html?product=premiere-elements&topic=serial-number-issues-or-activating-my-product
When the link is opened and "Serial Number Issues, Activating My Product" is selected in "2", then click on "I still need help" to obtain Adobe Chat pop up.

0009. Premiere Elements 12 Unrendered Timeline After Project Rendered Saved/Closed/Reopened

Premiere Elements 12* "rendered" Timeline content is often presenting as "unrendered" when the saved/closed rendered project is re-opened. Rendered or unrendered here is being defined by the program color for the line over the Timeline content with
  • no colored line or green line indicating no rendering needed to get the best possible preview of the Timeline content as viewed in the Edit Mode monitor
  • orange line indicating need for rendering to get the best possible preview of the Timeline content as viewed in the Edit Mode monitor
Rendering process is associated with the automatic generation of preview files saved to a designated computer hard drive location.
  • For a NTSC SD standard project, these files (for stills or video source) are DV AVI 720 x 480 4:3 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second (no audio).
  • For a NTSC SD widescreen project, these files (for stills or video source) are DV AVI 720 x 480 16:9 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second (no audio).
  • For the NTSC HD project, these files (still or video source) are MPEG2.mpeg 960 x 540 16:9 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second (no audio) accompanied by a .xmp file.
  • For PAL SD standard project, these files (for stills or video source) are DV AVI 720 x 576 4:3 @ 25 interlaced frames per second (no audio).
  • For PAL SD widescreen project, these files (for stills or video source) are DV AVI 720 x 576 16:9 @ 25 interlaced frames per second (no audio)
  • For PAL HD project, these files (still or video source) are MPEG2.mpeg 960 x 540 16:9 @ 25 interlaced frames per second (no audio) accompanied by a .xmp file.
At the time of this unexpected find of unrendered content, the associated preview files are still alive and well in their hard drive save location.

In the case of Premiere Elements 12, the trend seems to be going in the direction
  • render the Timeline content without fx Effects/Video Stabilizer/Stabilizer, save/close project with green line over Timeline content/files still "rendered" in re-opened project BUT
  • apply fx Effects/Video Stabilizer/Stabilizer to the content, render the content, save/close project with green line over Timeline content/rendered files present "unrendered" in the re-opened project...but preview files in hard drive save location are intact.
Considerably more work has to be done to define the "when and where" and related aspects of this type of event besides the whys. This frequency of this type of report seemed to peak in the days of Premiere Elements 7 and 8.0/8.0.1 and decrease in the versions afterward. So, it is surprising to see this type of happening so early into the history of the latest version 12.

Commentary:

There has been no fix on this type of thing for several versions to date. If you need to get the best possible preview on this footage that was last seen as "rendered" when you saved/closed the project and that is now presenting as "unrendered" in the reopened project:
  • render the whole again OR
  • render a selected segment of the Timeline, setting the gray tabs of the WorkArea Bar area to span just the area to be rendered OR
  • move on since you previewed this in the previous session and found the preview OK
In the past I have gone with the 3rd suggestion. As stated above, more work needs to be done on the specifics of this matter as it relates to Premiere Elements 12.

____________________________________________________________________________

*Work was done with Premiere Elements 12 of Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit. The primary file used was MPEG4 video compression and .mp4 file extension. Frame size = 640 x 480 pixels. Frame rate = 29.97 frames per second. The duration of the file was 1 minute and 53 seconds. While the Timeline render time for the video clip without the Stabilizer applied was less than a minute, the render time of that video clip with the Stabilizer applied was between 7 and 10 minutes. Premiere Elements 12 and 11 offered comparable Timeline render times under the circumstances described (+ or - 1 minute for the same clip with the Stabilizer applied).

0010. Premiere Elements 12 Missing Playback Settings

In Premiere Elements 11 and versions of Premiere Elements earlier than 11, "Playback Settings" could be accessed via
  • Playback Settings button in Edit Menu/Project Settings/General. Clicking on Playback Settings there opened the Playback Settings dialog.
Figure 1a. Premiere Elements 11. Edit Menu/Project Settings/General With Presence of Playback Settings Button To Access Playback Settings Dialog.
  • Playback Settings listing in drop down from right clicking Edit Mode monitor.
Figure 1b. Premiere Elements 11. Playback Settings Choice Using Right Clicking Of Edit Mode Monitor To Access Playback Settings Dialog.
The resulting Playback Setting dialog is represented in Figure 1c.

Figure 1c. Premiere Elements 11. Playback Settings Dialog.
Now in Premiere Elements 12, there is no Playback Settings button in Edit Menu/Project Settings/General or any where else. The Playback Settings listing is still in the drop down from right clicking Edit Mode monitor, but it is grayed out. Further, Edit Menu/Keyboard Customization/Windows has a place where a keyboard shortcut can be entered and subsequently used for Playback Settings. Various choices were tried, Ctrl+Shift+D and Alt+Shift+P, but none worked.

This matter is currently being investigated. Updates on this to follow when further developments. There was a 2012 thread in the Adobe Premiere Pro Forum to suggest that this situation was encountered in Premiere Pro CS6. Needs to be followed up.

0011. Elements Organizer 12 Catalog Automatic Renaming Related To Adobe Revel Sign In

Preface

Elements Organizer 12 has been running into problems with errors when
  • Selecting "Delete from Catalog" after right clicking Elements Organizer 12 thumbnail(s) in order to delete these thumbnails from the catalog.
  • Opening the Elements Organizer 12 (resulting shutdowns)
These issues have been remedied by one or both of the following
  • In the Premiere Elements 12 Expert workspace/Organizer Tab at bottom of workspace, Shift+Alt+Ctrl hold down, with mouse left click/hold down of click for 15 seconds, release of click at 15 seconds, Yes to pop up message about deleting Elements Organizer Settings File.
  • In the Elements Organizer 12 workspace, creating a new catalog via its File Menu/Manage Catalogs/Catalog Manager dialog.

The rest of the story.....

It was in the course of these creating new catalogs that it was discovered that the Elements Organizer catalog(s) were being renamed each time the Adobe Revel feature was signed into within in at least the Add Media area. For example, if the catalog was named My Catalog 12, the ID = email address such as JohnDoe@nowhere.com, and Adobe Revel signed into in Add Media, the My Catalog 12 would then be found as My Catalog 12 (JohnDoe@nowhere.com). The original catalog name My Catalog 12 was not reverted to when Adobe Revel was subsequently signed off.

0013. Premiere Elements 12 "Symbol" Font and Greek Letters and Windows Version/Edition

Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit

In the Premiere Elements 12 Titler/Text Section, there is only one "Symbol" text font, and there is only one "Regular" text style available there for it. Typing with that text font and style results in blocks and no Greek letters.

The same situation exists for Premiere Elements 11, 10, and 9.0/9.0.1.

However, for Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1, 7, and 4, although there is still only one "Symbol" text font in the Titler/Text section, there are two text styles available there, "Medium" as well as "Regular". Typing with "Regular" results in blocks, and typing with "Medium" offers that opportunity for typing Greek letters.

Local Disc C\Windows\Fonts display includes only one Symbol text font whose thumbnail is labelled "Symbol Regular" (Font name: Symbol; Version: Version 5.00; Digitally Signed: TrueType Outlines. The file has a file extension of .ttf, and its symbols are shown to include Greek letters.)

Windows XP Profession SP3 32 bit

Only Premiere Elements 11 and 8.0/8.0.1 were looked at in this regard. Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 presented as it did when installed on Windows 7 64 bit, that is, Symbol Regular, blocks and Symbol Medium, Greek letters. However, Premiere Elements 11 on Windows XP now offers both Symbol Medium, Greek letters opportunity, as well as Symbol Regular, blocks.

Local Disc C\Windows\Fonts display includes two Symbol text font thumbnails, one labelled "Symbol (TrueType)" and the other "Symbol (8, 10, 12, 14,...)".

The "Symbol (TrueType)" description includes
Symbol (Open Type)
Open Type Font, Digitally signed, True Type Outlines
Typeface name: Symbol
File Size: 68 Kb
Version: Version 1.60
The file has a file extension of .ttf, and its symbols are shown to include Greek letters.

The "Symbol (8, 10, 12, 14,...)" one just has the description of Symbol with samples of its offerings which seem to include Greek letters. This one has a file extension of .fon.

Windows 8.1 64 bit

Only Premiere Elements 12 and 11 were looked at in this regard. Both presented as they did in Windows 7 64 bit.

And like Windows 7 64 bit
Local Disc C\Windows\Fonts display includes only one Symbol text font whose thumbnail is labelled "Symbol Regular" (Font name: Symbol; Version: Version 5.00; Digitally Signed: TrueType Outlines. The file has a file extension of .ttf, and its symbols are shown to include Greek letters.)

This matter is being looked into further.

0014. DVdate Plug-In in Premiere Elements 12

It works! Details as follows.

The DVdate Plug-in has been used in some version*s of Premiere Elements to display a running Timecode within the Premiere Elements  Timeline video content. The current description of the plug-in by its manufacturer includes compatibility with Premiere Elements 10 64 bit. And, it has been found that this plug-in is readily compatible with Premiere Elements 10 on Windows 7 64 bit and Windows 8.1 64 bit. And, with a bit of maneuvering, it works also with Premiere Elements 11 on those operating systems and with Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 8.1 64 bit. A working Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 7 64 bit was not available at this time to test it with the DVdate plug-in.

Here are some of the highlights of the rest of the story.

  • Hitting the download button in link http://dvdate.ru/  results in the download of the DVdateSetup.exe file which is a 7.0 MB download.
  • The installation starts with setting the language. The only choices are English or Russian.
  • A License Agreement "I agree" or "I do not agree." follows.
Here is where it gets challenging if you want the DVdate plug-in for Premiere Elements 11 or 12 and not 10.

  • "Target application"* is given as "Adobe Premiere Elements 10.0, 11.0 (64 bit)" - no way to change that text. "Folder" underneath Target application shows Folder: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 10\Plug-ins\en_US\" . And, no way to change that. So, if you want DVdate installed in other than Premiere Elements 10, the only way found to do that  was to proceed with the plug-in install for Premiere Elements 10 and then copy the DVdate folder installed to
          For Premiere Elements 11
          C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 11\Plug-ins\en_US
          or
          For Premiere Elements 12
          C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 12\Plug-ins\en_US

Once the plug-in is installed it appears
  • Premiere Elements 10. Edit Header/Effects/Video Effects/Video/DVdate  (adjusts are made in Setup in DVdate panel in Properties Panel.
  • Premiere Elements 11. fx Effects/Video/DVdate (adjusts are made in Setup in DVdate panel in Applied Effects/Applied Effects Palette)
  • Premiere Elements 12. fx Effects/Video/DVdate (adjusts are made in Setup in DVdate panel in Applied Effects/Applied Effects Palette).
When this study was done previously, application of the DVdate effect to a video clip in Premiere Elements 12 Windows 8.1 64 bit resulted in freezing of the program. With a new download of DVdate, no problems were found using DVdate in Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 8.1 64 bit.

________________________________________________________________________________
* The Premiere Elements "Target Applications" lines that are offered in the beginning of the DVdate installation process include
Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, or 7.0
Adobe Premiere Elements 9.0
Adobe Premiere Elements 10.0, 11.0 (32 bit)
Adobe Premiere Elements 10.0, 11.0 (64 bit)

0015. ClipMate with Premiere Elements 12 for Copy/Paste Insert Between Projects

Like Premiere Elements 11, Premiere Elements 12 and ClipMate work* for the copy/paste insert between projects with the exception of transitions. Identical results for 11 and 12 in this regard. Interestingly for 11 and 12, ClipMate does copy/paste insert transitions within a given Premiere Elements project, but not from one Premiere Elements project to another Premiere Elements project.

Premiere Elements 12 was put through the same Premiere Elements ClipMate testing protocol as described for version 7, 8.0/8.0.1, 9.0/9.0.1, 10 and 11 in the May blog post "PE: ClipMate Copy/Paste Between Projects". Please refer to that blog post for further details.
For Premiere Elements 12, an extra test was included, that is, determining if the Fade In and Out Video and Audio applied to clips would copy/paste insert successfully from Premiere Elements project to another Premiere Elements project.. They did.

Just how much content a user can copy/paste insert from project to project at one time has not been established in these studies. Limited studies have suggested that the process works between two projects with different project presets. But without further studies, that is not being recommended at this time.
 _____________________________________________________________________________
 * Work, to the extent of the Premiere Elements Clip Mate testing protocol as defined in the
May 2013 blog post "PE: ClipMate Copy/Paste Between Projects".

0016. Premiere Elements 12 Keyboard Shortcuts

The Premiere Elements 11 Keyboard Customization/Keyboard Shortcuts were detailed in the

Note for both Premiere Elements 11 and 12.
Under the Edit Menu/Keyboard Customization/Application/TEXT/Transform, a keyboard shortcut can be created to adjust the Opacity of text and/or embedded image in the opened Titler. The Command created and saved for the Titler Opacity was Shift + X. Thereafter, when Shift + X was used in the opened Titler, an Opacity pop up appeared which allowed for entering Opacity % to be applied to the text and/or embedded image. This Opacity pop up is shown in Figure 1 for this 0016 topic.

0017. Premiere Elements 12.1 Update Released March 7, 2014

The Premiere Elements 12.1 Update was released by Adobe on March 7, 2014. Not much is known at this time about the specific corrections that the 12.1 Update makes in Premiere Elements 12 Editor. The description of the 12.1 Update for Premiere Elements 12 reads
This update corrects a number of issues with Premiere Elements regarding  stability and   performance. It is suggested that all users upgrade.
A 12.1 Update was also for Elements Organizer 12 and Photoshop Elements 12 as well as Premiere Elements 12. Each gave the same "corrects a number of issues regarding stability and performance" explanation as to what the 12.1 does.

For more and continuing information on this matter, please refer to blog post
PE12: 12.1 Update Released

0018. Premiere Elements 12: No Publish+Share/Sharing to Videotape Choice

Adobe document "Premiere Elements/Sharing to videotape" targets Premiere Elements 11 and suggests that Premiere Elements 11 Publish+Share/ includes sharing to videotape feature. Also, an excerpt from the Premiere Elements 12 Classroom in a Book by the Adobe Creative Team suggests that Premiere Elements 12 Publish+Share/ includes sharing to videotape feature.

An Adobe representative confirms that the above is not correct and says that Adobe is in the process of correcting documentation to reflect that Premiere Elements 11 and 12 do not have the Publish+Share/ sharing to videotape feature offered in earlier versions of Premiere Elements Sharing such as 10, 9.0/9.0.1, 8.0/8.0.1, 7, and 4.

Please see March 2014 blog post for further details..

0019. Premiere Elements 12: Sign In Failure (Connect to Internet or Fix Computer Clock)

Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 8.1 64 bit was deactivated by using Expert workspace Help Menu/Sign Out in order to test Premiere Elements 12 on Windows XP Professional SP3 32 bit. All went well.

When the testing was completed on Windows XP, Premiere Elements 12 there was deactivated successfully. But, attempts to activate Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 8.1 met with Sign In failure with message Connect to Internet or Fix Computer Clock. There was no problem with the Internet connect or with the computer clock.

The solution to the problem was to update the Adobe Application Manager - Adobe Creative Cloud. The tip for this solution came from Adobe Help (Sandeep) and is described in the April 2014 blog post titled
PE12: Sign In Failure (Connect to Internet or Fix Computer Clock).

0020. Adobe Revel Announcement (May 12, 2014) About Changes In Way Storage Will Work For Free Adobe Revel Accounts

As written about in the October 17, 2013 blog post, Adobe Revel presents in Premiere Elements 12 via
  • Add Media
  • Publish+Share
  • Free Adobe Revel account with limit of 50 photos/videos per month
Today an Adobe Revel email was received announcing  its changing of the way storage works for free Adobe Revel accounts. In a few weeks, it says that it will be taking the free 50 photos/videos per month limit for these free Adobe Revel accounts to free 2 GB Cloud storage. Adobe Revel projected that this change would give the user the opportunity for storing and sharing around 1000 photos without a monthly limit.
This has been interpreted to mean that, once a user reaches the 2 GB Cloud storage limit, he/she needs a paid Adobe Revel subscription to go beyond a total of 2GB of photos/video storage. The Adobe Revel paid subscription appears to offer unlimited storage and sharing at this time.

0021. Premiere Elements 12: Audio Losses After Narration Addition With Program's Narration Tool.

Several Premiere Elements 12 Windows and Mac users have reported the loss of sound (on numbered audio track and or Soundtrack) when narration is added to the Expert workspace Timeline using the Premiere Elements 12 Narration Tool.

The current fix for this issue was contributed by ID Llamadude99 (March 2, 2014). Many have used her fix or a modification of it to resolve the problem. She wrote:
I was trying different things and I went to tools to narration. I removed the mute audio before recording, then deleted the narration I previously did and then pressed undo, to bring it back and my audio returned on my video. Very strange but it worked.

For further details, please refer to the June 2014 blog post devoted to this issue of "PE12: Audio Losses After Narration Addition".

0022. Premiere Elements 12: Opacity Panel Blend Modes

Blend Modes comparable to those found in the Photoshop Elements Layers Palette are found in Premiere Elements 11 and 12 Editor under Applied Effects/Applied Effects Panel/Opacity Panel expanded.

The basics of the Premiere Elements 11 and 12 Blend Modes are for all intent and purposes the same as for the Photoshop Elements Blending Modes....
  • requires more than 1 track with content in order to work
  • track content to which blend mode is applied reacts with track content below....
Please refer to the in depth article "Layer Blending Modes in Photoshop and Elements"
http://www.northlite.net/ps/blend.htm

As one example....If presented with a logo with black text on a white background, there are several  ways in Premiere Elements 11 and 12 to get rid of that logo's white background in order to obtain the just the black text on a transparent background which would allow the Timeline track content below to display. A workflow for this might be
  • Background on Video Track 1
  • Logo (png created in Photoshop Elements 12) on Video Track 2
  • Highlight/Select the Logo on Video Track 2
  • Go to Applied Effects Tab/Applied Effects Palette/Opacity Panel expanded and change the Blend Mode from Normal to Multiply.
See Figure 1 (Blend Mode = Normal) and Figure 2 (Blend Mode = Multiply).

Figure 1. Logo (Video Track 2) With Its White Background. Blend Mode = Normal.

Figure 2. Logo (Video Track 2) With Its White Background Removed Using Blend Mode = Multiply.

Lots of exploration and experimentation yet to be done on these Premiere Elements 11 and 12 Blend Modes.

Premiere Elements 12 First Look Details

INTRODUCTION

Premiere Elements 12 tryout from Adobe was found online several hours ago and downloaded and installed (along with Photoshop Elements 12) on Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit with firewalls and anti-virus disabled. Mozilla Firefox version 23.0.1 was the browser used. The download and installation went without problems. This tryout will be the basis of the First Look work, and work will be confirmed and followed up with the purchased version at a later date.

With the exception of the "Guided" included between the "Quick" and "Expert" workspace headers, the Premiere Elements 12 Editor interface looked much like that seen for Premiere Elements 11.

Figure 1. Premiere Elements 12 Editor Windows Interface.
Oops. Nearly missed the Premiere Elements 11 Music Tab at the bottom right of the workspace being replaced in Premiere Elements 12 by Audio Tab. More on those later.

The following assortment of items were the first to catch my attention:

1. Using Process Explorer, confirmation that Premiere Elements 12 in Windows 7 64 bit is a 64 bit application.

2. Premiere Elements 12 Project Presets, new inclusions to the Premiere Elements 11 choices for NTSC AVCHD project presets are QFHD 16 x 9 23.976, QFHD 16 x 9 29.97, and QFHD 16 x 9 59.94. What is QFHD?
It appears to be for the source media with resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. The PAL counterparts would be just QFHD 16 x9 25 and QFHD 16x9 50.
Please refer to http://www.stuff-review.com/2012-04/what-is-4k-and-qfhd-resolution/
The default project preset appears to remain at NTSC AVCHD Full HD 1080i30 (NTSC install) or PAL AVCHD Full HD 1080i25 (PAL install).

3. Workspace Choice, "Guided", a new inclusion to the "Quick" and "Expert" workspace choices. The "Guided" step by step includes
  • Getting Started With Elements
  • Trimming Unwanted Frames
  • Adding Transitions Between Two Clips
  • Adding Scores To Your Movie
  • Adjusting Brightness+Contrast & Color
  • Adding Titles To Your Movie
  • Adding Narration To Your Movie
  • Creating A Picture In Picture
  • Animate Graphics Easily
4. Add Media, "Adobe Revel" as a new addition to the Premiere Elements 11 choices for Add Media. This Adobe Revel choice is described as "Drag Videos and Photos from Adobe Revel".

5. New, Publish+Share/Computer/XAVC-S.
What is XAVC-S?
It appears to be Sony's version of AVCHD (MPEG4 AVC/H.264) with a .mp4 wrapper. Please refer to http://www.redsharknews.com/technology/item/624-sony-reveals-its-consumer-4k-camera-format

6. Also in the Publish+Share area, new category "Private Web Album" which is Adobe Revel based.
And, the Premiere Elements 11 Online category is now named "Social Websites", but it still contains the Premiere Elements 11 choices of Facebook, Vimeo, or YouTube. Under the Disc category, Blu-ray continues to be just burn to, no burn to folder. And, as mentioned in "5", there is a new category under Computer named XAVC-S. Nearly missed the big news for Publish+Share/Disc/AVCHD, burn to disc or folder. There are 2 new NTSC presets with 23.976 progressive frames rate, but there are no PAL counterparts for them.

7. Rebirth of Motion Tracking in version 12 for this feature that was removed from version 11.
See Tools Menu or Tools Tab in Quick and Expert workspaces.

8. Camera Raw 8.0.0.137 as the version that comes with the Premiere Elements 12 tryout, but which can be updated to the latest version 8.2, using Premiere Elements 12 Help/Update.

9. Big news for the disc menu people, the number of Timeline menu markers appears now to be beyond the 25 limit of prior version. But, wait. I am still laughing on this one.
Given a menu with 6 scene buttons per page and 99 scene markers placed on the Expert workspace Timeline. No error or warning or limit messages. And, I did get 16 scene menu pages with 6 scenes and 1 scene menu page with 3. Great. When I went back to the Timeline to place a 100th scene marker, I could go no further and was greeted by the following message

Figure 2. Add Marker Error At Placement Of 100th Scene Marker.
Note "cannot exceed 25". Did someone forget to change the pop up dialog limit number? I still had my 17 scene menu pages with 99 scenes.

10. Adobe's overview of "What's New"

This focused on
  • Guided View For New Users
  • Auto Smart Tone
  • More Film Looks
  • New Film Looks
  • Yesteryear
  • Scores And Sound Effects
  • Motion Tracking
  • Video Adjustment Layers
11. Older issues seem to persist in Premiere Elements 12, such as

Now begins the exploration of Premiere Elements 12 to determine gains, losses, and no changes going old to new.

PART 1 WORKSPACE OVERVIEW

There are now 3 workspaces in Premiere Elements 12. Expert and Quick workspaces are carried over from version 11 and a new one added, seen as Guided (a step by step workspace). In reality, it can be Guided Quick or Guided Expert.

Expert and Quick Workspaces
Menu Headers

The Premiere Elements 12 menu header lineup remains the same as in Premiere Elements 11: File, Edit, Clip, Timeline, Text, Action Bar, Tools, Window, Help. On the whole there were more no changes than gains or losses in the comparison of the old and new.

File. Loss. "Revert" which has to do with Undoing changes.
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premiereelements/using/WS09e4b3c48f3a79fc19b622510385d4355c-7fdb.html

Edit. No Change.

Clip. No Change.

Timeline. Gain. "New Adjustment Layer" which appears to be an option to create a new blank file above a video clip so that effects applied to it are reflected in the video below it. The perk is that the "New Adjustment Layer" can be resized, repositioned, and have it duration altered. In non technical terms, it might be considered an Effects Mask on steroids and possibly less problematic. However, the Effects Mask feature is still available under the Clip Menu.

Text. No Change.

Action Bar. TradeOff. Premiere Elements 11 Music is now replaced with Audio. Still relates to scored customizable audio but without a SmartSound label. More on this later.

Tools. Gain. The reborn Motion Tracking option. To be gone into later.

Window. No change.

Help. TradeOff. Sign Out (with user email address listed) appears to be a replacement for Premiere Elements 11's "Deactivate".

There are still a Save button and a Play Full Screen button to the far right of the menu headers.

Guided Workspace
Step by Step Workflows

This workspace can be Guided Expert or Guided Quick. Figure 3 shows a view of the Guided Expert workspace.

Figure 3. Premiere Elements 12 Guided Expert Workspace.

Expert and Quick Workspaces
Add Media

Expert and Quick Workspaces have the same Add Media choices. And, as in Premiere Elements 11, in Premiere Elements 12, Expert route is Add Media to Project Assets to Expert Timeline and Quick route is Add Media direct to the Quick Filmstrip. Figure 4 shows Expert Add Media and the choices.

Figure 4. Expert and Quick Workspace Add Media Choices.
The new addition to the lineup is Adobe Revel which is described "Drag videos and photos from Adobe Revel". Please refer to October 2013 blog post on Premiere Elements 12 Adobe Revel for more details.

The ordering of the choices is different so, for those who are used to "Files and folders" located toward the bottom of the list, there may be some unintended DV Camcorder hits.

Expert workspace Project Assets remains the same as in Premiere Elements 11. For those who did not read the Premiere Elements 11 First Look, the "Pin View" icon may be a puzzlement. The story is that, when the icon is pressed in and shows a gray background, Project Assets stays open after the file is dragged from it to the Expert Timeline. If icon is not depressed, Project Assets closes after the file is dragged from it to the Expert Timeline. Refer to Figure 5.

Figure 5. Project Assets' Pin View Option.

Expert and Quick Workspaces
Publish+Share

Premiere Elements 12 Publish+Share major categories are Private Web Album, Social Websites, Disc, webDVD, Computer, Mobile Phones and Players. Disc, webDVD, Computer, and Mobile Phones and Players are carry overs from version 11 to 12. Social Websites is the renamed Premiere Elements 11's Online. Private Web Album is new and is Adobe Revel based. Details of the offerings of each of these categories will be presented in a later Part of this blog post.

Figure 6. Expert and Quick Publish+Share Major Export Categories.

Expert and Quick Workspaces
Markers

It would appear that Expert workspace Markers include Menu Marker (main, scene, and stop), Beat Marker, and Timeline Markers (numbered and unnumbered); whereas, Quick workspace offers only Menu Marker (main, scene, and stop).

The big news is that max 99 menu markers allowable in the project in contrast to the 25 limit for version 11. Please refer to 9 in the INTRODUCTION. Also refer to the April, 2013 blog post "PE11: Menu Marker Limit Implementation Problem".

Expert and Quick Workspaces
Adjust

The Premiere Elements 12 Adjust choices under the Adjust button to the right edge of the interface are, for Expert, Smart Fix, Auto Smart Tone, Color, Color (RGB), Gamma Correct, Lighting, and Temperature and Tint. Quick Adjust offers the same choices, except no Color (RGB) and Gamma Correct.

Except for the new feature of Auto Smart Tone, nothing new here. Well, maybe not completely so. In Premiere Elements Quick Adjust, not Expert Adjust, there is now a "Entire Movie" tab at the top right of the Adjustments Palette. It appears to be a toggle for "Show/Hide Entire Movie Settings". It took a while to figure what this was supposed to be doing. See Tip for what is believed to be the function of the "Entire Movie" tab in Quick Adjust.

Tip: When one of the"Adjusts" is applied to a clip in Expert Adjust or Quick Adjust, there is a small green dot automatically placed on the header panel for Adjust applied. In the Quick Adjust only, the user can toggle the green dot on or off for the clip to which the adjust have been applied with this "Entire Movie" tab in order to, as it says, "Show/Hide Entire Movie Settings".

Expert and Quick Workspaces
Applied Effects

As in Premiere Elements 11 Expert or Quick, Motion Panel and Opacity Panel are the default panels under Applied Effects/Applied Effects Palette to the right edge of the interface. For Quick only there is that "Entire Movie" tab at the top right of the Applied Effects Palette. Here it functions to show or hide only the panels that are added during the course of the workflow.

Miscellaneous

The bottom row of the interface contains from left to right tabs for Undo, Redo, Organizer, Instant Movie, Tools, Transitions, Titles & Text, fx Effects,  Audio, and Graphics. And, rendering of the Timeline content can be done by
  • pressing Enter key of the computer main keyboard
  • Render button above the Timeline
  • Timeline/Render Work Area
same as in Premiere Elements 11. And, the rendering indicators remain no colored line or green line over Timeline content implying no rendering needed to get best possible preview and orange line over Timeline content implying need to render the Timeline content to get the best possible preview of what is seen in the Edit Mode monitor.

PART 2 PROJECT PRESETS

Premiere 12 as does 11 automatically sets the project preset for the project based on the properties of the source media that first arrive on the Expert Timeline or Quick Filmstrip. Sometimes it does it OK, sometimes not. An April 2013 blog post here addressed that situation in version 11. The same situation appears to exist in version 12. Consequently, manual setting of the project preset via File Menu/New/New Project before importing media is highly recommended until the automatic set can be trusted for the particular video source being used.

Like Premiere Elements 11, the Premiere Elements 12 major project preset categories are AVCHD, DSLR, DV, FLIP (for NTSC only), Hard Drive, Flash Memory Camcorders, HDV, and Mobile Devices. But there are some new project presets under the AVCHD category. For NTSC, they are QFHD 16x9 23.976, QFHD 16x9 29.97, and QFHD 59.94. For PAL, they are QFHD 16x9 25 and QFHD 16x9 50. These are choices for progressive video at the designated frame rates. Frame size is 3840 x 2160 pixels. Later on when version 12 exports are focused on, details for a 3840 x 2160 AVCHD export (XAVC-S). Also, see 5 in INTRODUCTION.

Refer to Figure 7 and Figure for the list of Premiere Elements 12 expanded choices. Read the description of each fully before you set your project preset manually.

Figure 8. Premiere Elements 12 PAL Project Presets In New Project Dialog.

PART 3 CONTENT

Content: Instant Movie, Titles & Text, Audio, Graphics, and Movie Menu

With the exception of a few itemsPremiere Elements 12 Content continues to be available only from downloads from within the program. Refer to May 2013 blog post on this type of Content download which can be slow depending on Internet connection speed and status of Adobe server. Content with a blue ban at the top right of a theme thumbnail requires download for use. That blue ban is double clicked with the mouse cursor in order to get the pop up for Download Now or Download All. Please refer to Figure 9a and Figure 9b demo'd with Instant Movie theme Wedding Doves. But, what is shown in those Figures applies to all the Content whose thumbnail has that blue ban.

Figure 9a. Theme Needing Download Before Use.

Figure 9b. Online Content Download Dialog After Selecting Download Now Option From Pop Up Shown In Figure 9a.

These downloads automatically complete already installed incomplete Content for
  • Instant Movie
  • Titles & Text
  • Audio
  • Graphics
  • Movie Menu
The gains, losses, and no change in this Premiere Elements 12 Content as compared to version 11's Content will be detailed in what follows here in PART 3 CONTENT.

Instant Movie. No change.
Premiere Elements 11 and 12 Instant Movie choices are the same. The major categories and number of themes per category are Slideshow (2), Event (12), Memories (3), Pets (2), and Style (22).

Also see Action Bar Menu for access to display of Instant Movie choices.

Slideshow/Pan and Zoom which comes complete with the install (no extra Content download required) is found in Windows 7 or 8 64 bit in the path
Local Disc C\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 12\Movie Themes\Slideshow\Pan and Zoom.
All the rest of the Instant Movie themes are found in Windows 7 or 8 64 bit in the path
Local Disc C\Program Data\Adobe\Premiere Elements\12.0\Online\Movie Themes\All_Lang\ and then the folders for Slideshow, Events, Memories, Pets, Style. Each of the latter folders contain theme folders.

The choices for Instant Movie theme appear to be the same whether in the Expert or Quick based workspaces.

Titles & Text. No change.
Premiere Elements 11 and 12 Title & Text choices are the same. The major categories and number of themes per category are General (11), Entertainment (8), HD Templates (40), Slideshow (1), Happy Birthday (2), Holidays and Events (9), Kid's Corner (5), Memories (5), Movie Genre (8), New Baby (8), Pets (2), Seasons (5), Sports (6), Travel (7), and Wedding (3).

Also see Action Bar Menu for access to the display of Titles & Text choices.

General/Defaults, HD Templates/Pan and Zoom, and Slideshow/Pan and Zoom which come complete with the install (no extra Content download required) are found in Windows 7 or 8 64 bit in the path
Local Disc C\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 12\Presets\Templates\Common\ and the Common Folder contains folders for General, HD Templates, and Slideshow. The latter 3 folders contain respectively a Default, Pan and Zoom, and Pan and Zoom folder which houses the related theme's text files. Any graphics for these text files are found in Presets\Logos.
All the rest of the Titles & Text themes are found in Windows 7 or 8 64 bit in the path
Local Disc C\Program Data\Adobe\Premiere Elements\12.0\Online\Title Templates\All_Lang\ and then the folders General, Entertainment, HD Templates, Happy Birthday, Holidays and Events, Kid's Corner, Memories, Movie Genre, New Baby, Pets, Seasons, Sports, Travel, and Wedding.  Each of the latter folders contain theme folders which appear to contain, after Content download, both text and graphic files along with its other assets.
The choices for Titles & Text theme appear to be the same whether in the Expert or Quick based workspaces.

Audio.  Gains, Losses.
Premiere Elements 12's Audio Tab in the bottom row of tabs in the workspace is the former Music Tab of version 11. And, the content under the Audio tab is different than that found under 11's Music Tab. The prior version's Music Tab housed 10 thumbnails representing 10 SmartSound soundtracks, each with 30 seconds duration and ready to use plus the text "Use SmartSound" to click on to gain access to the "Sonicfire Pro 5 ET (SmartSound Express Track)" interface where those free and other free SmartSound soundtracks could be customized to fit the duration of the video without compromising the arrangement of the soundtrack. Although the concept of the SmartSound soundtrack remains in version 12 under the Audio Tab, no trace of the SmartSound name was to be found.

Now under Premiere Elements 12's Audio Tab are two major categories, Music Scores and Sound Effects.

Figure 10. Premiere Elements 12. Audio Tab/Music Score And Sound Effects.

Music Score has 7 subcategories and a total of 51 free soundtracks, customizable according to the SmartSound concept. The Music Score subcategories and the number of soundtracks in them are Ambient (6), Atmospheric (8), Blues (2), Country (5), Rock-Pop (22), Urban (4), and Weddings (5).

Sound Effects has 13 subcategories and a total of 267 or 268 free sound effects. The Sound Effects subcategories and the number of sound effects in them are Ambience (49), Animals (10), Cartoon Effects (20), Crashes (10), Fire and Explosions (18), Foley (30), Impacts (20), Industry (10), Liquids (10), Science Fiction (30), Technology (29 or 30), Transportation (11), and Weather (20).

The same Music Score and Sound Effects offerings are available in the Expert and Quick workspaces. All these files appear to be .wav files on Windows and .aiff files on Mac.

Also see Action Bar Menu at top of workspace for access to the display of Audio choices.

The Music Score and Sound Effects folders and files can be found in Windows 7 or 8 64 bit in the path
Local Disc C\Program Data\Adobe\Premiere Elements\12.0\Online. The Online Folder includes a Music Score Folder and a Sound Effects Folder. The Music Score Folder contains an All_Lang Folder which contains folders for the subcategories. Each subcategory folder contains a theme folder which houses the theme's assets. The Sound Effect Folder has a similar sub-structure.
Premiere Elements Audio Tab set up as well as "Sonicfire Pro 5 - ET/SmartSound Express Track/whatever it is called" through the versions will be gone into in more detail soon in the Premiere Elements 12 Daily Discoveries blog post. The names of those 267 or 268 Sound Effects are unbelievable. The "267 or 268" relates back to the finding that the program files showed 30 Sound Effects for the Technology subscategory; whereas, in the program, there were only 29 entries under Technology. The one missing in the program appears to be "Electron Camcorder Panasonic Dvx100 Placing Battery On Camera Fast".

Graphics. No Change.
Premiere Elements 11 and 12 Graphics choices are the same. As in 11, the version 12 choices are considerably less in the Quick than in the Expert workspace (15 vs 359). In the Expert workspace, major categories and number of themes per category are Animals Bird and Inserts (13), Animated Objects (18), Baby (21), HD Animations (12), Costumes (39), Thought and Speech Bubbles (24), Food (12), Holidays and Special Occasions (55), Home Items (31), Miscellaneous (67), Music (6), Nature (46), and Sports and Hobbies (15). The underlined major categories do not require Content download for use; they come with the program install.

The Quick workspace graphics are non categorized and are presented under the Graphics Tab in a batch of 15 themes from various Expert workspace major graphics categories.

Also see Action Bar Menu at top of workspace for access to the display of Graphics choices.

The graphics that come with the program install are found in the Windows 7 or 8 64 bit path
Local Disc C

Common
and in the Common Folder are the category folders for Animals Bird and Insects, Baby, Costumes, Food, Holidays and Special Occasions, Home Items, Miscellaneous, Music, Nature, Sports and Hobbies. In the latter category folders are the graphic files.
The graphics that require Content download before use are found in the Windows 7 or 8 64 bit path

Clip Arts
All_Lang
and in the All_Lang Folder are the category folders for Animated Objects, HD Animated Objects, and Thought and Speech Bubbles. Each of the latter folders contains theme folders which contain the graphic files.
Movie Menu. No Change.
Premiere Elements 11 and 12 Movie Menu choices are the same, with 1 menu coming with program install and the rest requiring Content download from within the program in order to complete the incomplete theme folder assets. All the Expert Movie Menu choices are available in Quick. Movie Menu is accessed from the Action Bar Menu at the top of the workspace.

There are 14 major Movie Menu categories with a total of 73 menus. The Movie Menu categories and the number of themes in each category are Entertainment (6), General (10), Happy Birthday (3), Holiday and Events (9), Kid's Corner (5), Memories (5), Movie Genre (6), New Baby (5), Pets (2), Seasons (5), Slideshows (2), Sports (6), Travel (7), and Wedding (2).

The Movie Menu that comes with the program install is found in the Windows 7 or 8 64 bit path
Local Disk C\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 12\DVD Templates\Common\Slideshows\ Pan and Zoom. And, in the Pan and Zoom theme folder are the assets for the theme.
All the rest of the Movie Menu themes are found in Windows 7 or 8 64 bit in the path
Local Disk C\Program Data\Adobe\Premiere Elements\12.0\Online\DVD Templates\All_Lang. And in the All_Lang Folder are the major category folders, each of them containing theme folders which contain the theme assets.

Content: Transitions and fx Effects

Like Premiere Elements 11, Transitions and fx Effects all come as part of the Premiere Elements 12 install. No Content download.

Transitions. No change.
Premiere Elements 12 and 11 have the same Transitions, same points of access (Action Bar Menu and Transition Tab), and only a limited number of Expert workspace Transitions available in the Quick workspace.

Expert workspace Transitions has 16 categories and offers 107 Transitions. The 16 categories and the number of transitions in each category are 3D Motion (10), Dissolve (8), Iris (7), Map (2), NewBlue 3D Explosions (8), NewBlue 3D Transformation Elements (6), NewBlue Art Blends Elements (8), NewBlue Motion Blends Elements (7), Page Peel (5), Picture Wipes (3), Slide (12), Special Effects (3), Stretch (5), Wipe (17), Zoom (4), and Audio Transitions (2).

The Quick workspace Transitions are not categorized and are presented as a bunch of 16 of the 107 Transitions found in Expert.

Hard drive location for many of these Transitions appear to be in the Windows 7 or 8 64 bit path
Local Disc C\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 12\Plug-ins\Common\New Blue
fx Effects. Small Gain.
Except for 4 new fx Effects under Film Looks, Premiere Elements 12 and 11 have the same fx Effects, same points of access (Action Bar Menu and fx Effects Tab), and only a limited number of Expert workspace fx Effects available in the Quick workspace. The 4 new Film Looks fx Effects are named Comic, Cross Process, Trinity, and Yesteryear.

Expert workspace fx Effects has 21 categories and offers 120 plus fx Effects. The 21 categories and the number of effects in each category are Advanced Adjustments (17), Blur & Sharpen (5), Channel (2), Color Correction (3), Distort (8), Generate (1), Image Control (4), Keying (15), NewBlue Art Effects Elements (9), NewBlue Cartoonr (1), NewBlue Film Look (1), Perspective (4), Pixelate (1), Render (2), Stylize (10), Time (2), Transform (8), Video Stablizer (1), Videomerge (1), Audio Effects (19), Presets (uncounted), and Film Looks (16).

The Quick workspace fx Effects are not categorized and are presented as a bunch of 20 of the 120 plus fx Effects found in Expert.

Hard drive location for many of these fx Effects appear to be in the Windows 7 or 8 64 bit path

PART 4 PUBLISH+SHARE

Premiere Elements 12 has 6 major sharing categories, one new named Private Web Album (Adobe Revel related) and 5 carryovers from version 11, Social Websites (called Online in version 11), Disc, webDVD, Computer, and Mobile Phones and Players. See Figure 6 in Part 1 Workspace Overview.

What follows is a look at these 6 major sharing categories and the options offered by each.

Private Web Album. Gain. NEW. Premiere Elements 12 Publish+Share/Private Web Album is described as an opportunity to upload the Timeline content to Adobe Revel and Mobile Album where the Timeline content in video format can be shared with friends and family. The Adobe ID and Password are used to gain access to the Adobe Revel Publish+Share feature. When the feature is used for the first time, a "downloading preset" pop up appears and disappears, but it is never shown just what the preset is. The Upload can be seen progressing through essentially 4 stages

  • Rendering Media
  • Uploading
  • Transferring  to Adobe Revel
  • Success Notification as seen in Figure 7

Limited studies suggest that the preset used may be

1280 x 720 pixels @ 29.97 progressive frames per second
Video Compression = AVCHD, Audio Compression = AAC (Stereo),  File Extension = .mp4.

The keywords for this feature include Mobile Album and associated email which contains invitation for friend or family to view the upload at Adobe Revel, using a link provided in the email.

Please see October 2013 blog post which goes into details related to Premiere Elements 12 Adobe Revel.

Social Websites. No change, except for naming from version 11's Online to Social Websites in version 12. The choices under Social Websites continue to be Facebook, Vimeo, and You-Tube. All is the same 12 versus 11, including no Advanced Button option to customize the presets and no "Share WorkArea Bar Only" option. The presets are the same whether the project settings are for NTSC or PAL project.

DISC. Gain.
Like version 11, version 12 has Publish+Share/Disc containing 3 sub-categories DVD, AVCHD, Blu-ray. The DVD and AVCHD sub-cateogories offer burn to disc as well as burn to folder (4.7 GB) and burn to folder (8.5 GB). And, Blu-ray is still a burn to disc only as before. But, the big news is 2 new NTSC burn to presets for progressive video under AVCHD (burn to folder or disc). They are H.264 1440 x 1080p NTSC Dolby and H.264 1920 x 1080p NTSC Dolby. No PAL counterparts. The big news is also that these 2 presets have frame rates of 23.976 progressive frames per second, not the 29.97 interlaced frames of the other presets.

The other big news in this area is raising the menu marker limit from 25 to 99 menu markers per project.

The choices under the DISC major category do not have an Advanced Button for customization of the presets nor does it have a Share WorkAreaBar Only option. The PAL and NTSC show the same choices in these major sub-categories.

H.264 1920 x 1080p NTSC Dolby NEW

Except for the two new 1080p presets with frame rate of 23.976 frames per second, the other presets all have 29.97 interlaced frames per second NTSC and 25 interlaced frames per second PAL.

WebDVD. No change.
There is one choice under Publish+Share/webDVD, that is Computer, described as "Save to folder on computer" and a flash file with menu. Selection of a Movie Menu is an absolute requirement for opening webDVD.

The presets differ, depending on whether NTSC or PAL project. For NTSC project, the presets are HD NTSC, SD High Quality NTSC, and SD Medium Quality NTSC. For PAL project, the presets are HD PAL, SD High Quality PAL, and SD Medium Quality PAL. All is the same 12 versus 11, including no Advanced Button option to customize the presets and no "Share WorkArea Bar Only" option.

This is sort of a "burn to folder" operation. A test run was set up with 3 jpg photos on Video 1, a mp3 audio on Audio 1 to match the photo duration, the Autumn Movie Menu 1 main menu page and 1 scene menu page, with a jpg photo insert in the main menu. After hitting the Build button in the webDVD export area, the sequence of steps that followed were Encoding Menu 1 of 2, Encoding Menu 2 of 2, Encoding Media Video Segment 1 o 3, Encoding Media Video Segment 2 of 3, Encoding Media Video Segment 3 of 3, Compiling Media, Burning to Folder, and Build Complete.

The assets that were found in the saved folder for this export are show in Figure 11.

Figure 11. Premiere Elements 11 or 12. Contents Of WEBDVD Folder.

In the Windows 7 64 bit computer in use, flashdvd.swf played with the Internet Explore and the Play_webDVD.html played back on Mozilla Firefox. Each of the 3 "clips" had its own .flv file. The thumbnail.png represented the jpg photo used as an insert in the main menu. Differences seen in the properties of the flashdvd.swf and Movie1.f4v, Movie2.f4v, and Movie3.f4v files will be cited in the Premiere Elements 12 Daily Discoveries blog post.

It is noted in the Premiere Elements 12 Daily Discoveries blog post, item 0005, that there appears to be an issue trying to set the frame rate higher than 30 frames per second in the Export Settings under the Advanced Button of the preset. The Profile and Level settings do not appear to have been upgraded for such as task.
