PE 15: Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing

INTRODUCTION

The January 11, 2014 blog post addressed "Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing"/"What is it all about?"/"Where can I find it in Premiere Elements?". Important: see HERE for this blog post which gives details for this feature in Premiere Elements earlier than version 11 contrasted with details of this feature in Premiere Elements 11 and 12.

ISSUE

To date, Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing feature details have not been updated here for Premiere Elements 13/13.1, 14/14.1, and the current version, 15.

UPDATE

The Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing settings requirements at the "rubberband" level are essentially the same for Premiere Elements 11, 12/12.1, 13/13.1, 14/14.1, and 15. But, in 15 workspace, there are some feature access changes in the workspace. See Figure 1 for 15 workspace Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing related components.

  • After selecting the Timeline video clip, Auto Levels is applied to that clip by selecting "Fix/Adjust icon/Adjustments/Lighting panel expanded/Auto Levels tab" which are located at the workspace's right vertical tool bar.
  • Once the Auto Levels is applied to the selected video clip by clicking* on the Auto Levels tab in the expanded Lighting's panel, Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing will only then appear as a choice in the video clip's title bar options (originally, it is set by default to Opacity).
  • Then the Timeline video clip's rubberband** (range 1 to 10) becomes the Temporal Smoothing rubberband, and the rubberband can be moved up or down with the mouse cursor in order to adjust the Temporal Smoothing level. Movement of the Temporal Smoothing rubberband is accompanied by a small rectangle displaying the Temporal Smoothing value for wherever the Temporal Smoothing rubberband is placed.
Tips***-
  • In Premiere Elements 14/14.1 and 15, the Temporal Smoothing rubberband has been created  correctly if the Timeline's video clip title bar reads "name of video clip (V) Rubberband: Auto Levels:Temporal Smoothing (seconds)", immediately followed by a small downward pointing triangle.  In Premiere Elements 11, 12/12.1, and 13/13.1, the word rubberband is not included in the video clip's title bar.
  • The Temporal Smoothing rubberband set is done by waving the mouse curse over the rubberband until the mouse cursor presents as a small vertical line with start and end arrowhead (version 14/14.1, 15) or a small vertical line with start and end arrowhead with a small horizontal line going through the middle of the vertical line (versions 11, 12/12.1, 13/13.1).
  •  The video clip title bar title is set in either of two ways (1) from drop down list by clicking on the small downward pointing triangle which is at the end of the video clip title bar title or (2) from pop up menu obtained from right clicking the video clip to use the pop up menu's option Show Clip Keyframes/ and its option for Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing.
COMMENTARY

At this time, this blog post did not make any attempt to evaluate critically how well Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing works in video editing.

Work in progress.

*Auto Levels can be deselected by pressing on the Auto Levels tab. And, there is a Reset button in the expanded Lighting panel. Always make sure video clip title bar title is set correctly before and after making changes in the default Opacity setting.
**For general information on the Premiere Elements "rubberband", see HERE.
***Work done with Premiere Elements Windows.
