PE 15: Program Installed From Adobe Disc Or Adobe Download?

INTRODUCTION

Frequently the question arises as to whether or not the installed Premiere Elements program is the same if it is installed using the Adobe disc instead of the Adobe download. Keep in mind that, at this time, Adobe direct sells only the download version which is marketed as full featured (trial or purchase); whereas the program on Adobe disc as well as a downloaded version can be purchased from 3rd party vendors. Typically, the question of disc versus download install is answered by the reply that the installed program is same from either type of install.

One scenario that causes this type of question relates to user with a computer which does not come with a DVD drive. Another scenario may involve the user who wants the same program on desktop with DVD drive and, at the same time, on a second computer that does not come with DVD drive.

Be it Adobe Premiere Elements 15 DVD disc or the Adobe Premiere Elements 15 download, operating system support is for Windows 7 SP1, 8, or 10 64 bit (32 bit systems no longer supported) or Mac with 64 bit multicore Intel processor including operating system information Mac OSX 10.10 or 10.11 or 10.12.
Note: Photoshop Elements 15/Premiere Elements 15 combo box packaging gives the Mac OSX 10.10 or 10.11. Adobe Premiere Elements 15 download page is not specific. Adobe Premiere Elements 15 System Requirements online document includes Mac OSX 10.12 as well as 10.10 or 10.11.

ISSUE

Language availability for a Premiere Elements version's DVD disc versus download should be considered for Premiere Elements Windows or Mac. See HERE. This focus will use Premiere Elements 15 and data from the Adobe Premiere Elements 15 download and the Adobe Premiere Elements 15 DVD disc which was purchased as part of a Photoshop Elements15/Premiere Elements 15 combo box packaged from a USA consumer electronics retailer.

PE: Copy Paste Opportunities Overview

INTRODUCTION

Various copy/paste Timeline opportunities exist within a Premiere Elements* project, such as, "Copy/Paste", "Copy/Paste Insert", and "Copy/Paste Effects and Attributes" (which is just called Paste Attributes for Premiere Elements 10 and earlier) . Also, using 3rd party software such as ClipMate, there is a possibility of "Copy/Paste Insert between different Premiere Elements projects. See HERE.

ISSUE

Because of the popularity and interest of the Premiere Elements user, it was decided to do a quick overview on the subject of Premiere Elements copy/paste Timeline opportunities using Premiere Elements 15 Windows 64 bit for this quick overview.

COPY/PASTE OPPORTUNITIES

Timeline Titles

When a title is created in the project's Titler, a title clip is placed automatically in Project Assets as well as in Timeline at the position of the Timeline Indicator. If copies of this Timeline or Project Assets title clip are created, same edits of one of the copies will simultaneously take place in all of those copies for that particular title clip.

One workaround is to go to the title clip in Project Assets, right click that title clip, select Duplicate from the drop down pop up. Then drag the Duplicate (example automatically named Title 01 copy)  from Project Assets to the Timeline, double click the Duplicate on the Timeline to open the Titler where further edits can be performed without altering the original (example automatically named here Title 01).
Interesting...if a title clip's copies are created in Project using right clip/drop down menu Copy then Paste, the copied title clip will behave like the "Duplicate" described above; however the copy will have the same name as the original, that is, Title 01, and not Title 01 Copy. Consequently, title clip naming management may be a consideration.

Timeline Contents (non Titles)

The Copy/Paste Effects and Attributes for a given Timeline clip will copy "all" effects and attributes of one clip to another. In order to give some sort of specificity to this situation, few examples for one to consider
  • if an effect is based in Applied Effects**, copy that effect's panel there and paste that into Applied Effects for the second clip.
  • if a keyframing effect is involved, copy of the original keyframing can be done by copying the keyframes in the expanded Adjustments area*** revealed by using that area's "Show/hide keyframe controls" icon.

ClipMate
Between Projects Copying Maintaining Timeline Content, Transitions And Audio

ClipMate (Windows Only, current version 7.5.26) in conjunction with Premiere Elements 15 Windows performs essentially as with Premiere Elements 14/14.1 Windows with regard to Edit Menu/Capture Special with selections of PProAE/Exchange/Track Item and PPro/MZ/Cooke. The major difference between 15 and 14/14.1/ClipMate is that Narrations and Soundtracks go to the Timeline's Voice and Music tracks respectively of the Paste Insert project and not to upper tracks of the Paste Insert project. Important: See HERE for history on ClipMate/Premiere Elements.

PE 15: Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing

INTRODUCTION

The January 11, 2014 blog post addressed "Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing"/"What is it all about?"/"Where can I find it in Premiere Elements?". Important: see HERE for this blog post which gives details for this feature in Premiere Elements earlier than version 11 contrasted with details of this feature in Premiere Elements 11 and 12.

ISSUE

To date, Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing feature details have not been updated here for Premiere Elements 13/13.1, 14/14.1, and the current version, 15.

UPDATE

The Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing settings requirements at the "rubberband" level are essentially the same for Premiere Elements 11, 12/12.1, 13/13.1, 14/14.1, and 15. But, in 15 workspace, there are some feature access changes in the workspace. See Figure 1 for 15 workspace Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing related components.

Figure 1. Premiere Elements 15 Expert Workspace Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing Components.
  • After selecting the Timeline video clip, Auto Levels is applied to that clip by selecting "Fix/Adjust icon/Adjustments/Lighting panel expanded/Auto Levels tab" which are located at the workspace's right vertical tool bar.
  • Once the Auto Levels is applied to the selected video clip by clicking* on the Auto Levels tab in the expanded Lighting's panel, Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing will only then appear as a choice in the video clip's title bar options (originally, it is set by default to Opacity).
  • Then the Timeline video clip's rubberband** (range 1 to 10) becomes the Temporal Smoothing rubberband, and the rubberband can be moved up or down with the mouse cursor in order to adjust the Temporal Smoothing level. Movement of the Temporal Smoothing rubberband is accompanied by a small rectangle displaying the Temporal Smoothing value for wherever the Temporal Smoothing rubberband is placed.
Tips***-
  • In Premiere Elements 14/14.1 and 15, the Temporal Smoothing rubberband has been created  correctly if the Timeline's video clip title bar reads "name of video clip (V) Rubberband: Auto Levels:Temporal Smoothing (seconds)", immediately followed by a small downward pointing triangle.  In Premiere Elements 11, 12/12.1, and 13/13.1, the word rubberband is not included in the video clip's title bar.
  • The Temporal Smoothing rubberband set is done by waving the mouse curse over the rubberband until the mouse cursor presents as a small vertical line with start and end arrowhead (version 14/14.1, 15) or a small vertical line with start and end arrowhead with a small horizontal line going through the middle of the vertical line (versions 11, 12/12.1, 13/13.1).
  •  The video clip title bar title is set in either of two ways (1) from drop down list by clicking on the small downward pointing triangle which is at the end of the video clip title bar title or (2) from pop up menu obtained from right clicking the video clip to use the pop up menu's option Show Clip Keyframes/ and its option for Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing.
COMMENTARY

At this time, this blog post did not make any attempt to evaluate critically how well Auto Levels/Temporal Smoothing works in video editing.

Work in progress.

_______________________________________________________________________________
*Auto Levels can be deselected by pressing on the Auto Levels tab. And, there is a Reset button in the expanded Lighting panel. Always make sure video clip title bar title is set correctly before and after making changes in the default Opacity setting.
**For general information on the Premiere Elements "rubberband", see HERE.
***Work done with Premiere Elements Windows.

PE: Write-On Video Effect

 INTRODUCTION

The Write-on effect is introduced in Premiere Elements 14/14.1 and also is included in the current version 15. In the program's project, the effect is found under fx Effects/Video/Generate and seems best considered as a video clip only effect. See comment in ISSUE below. The Adobe details for this effect can be found in the Premiere Elements Effects Reference document HERE. Toggle Animation is a key player in this task function. Since this effect is not listed in that Adobe document as a Windows Only effect, it is assumed that the effect is an option in Mac* and Windows versions of Premiere Elements 14/14.1 and 15.

ISSUE

Consistent with the Adobe document on Write-on effect, I could not get the Write-on effect to work on a Timeline still. This issue was overcome by exporting the Timeline still as a video file using the Export & Share section of the project and then importing that video file into the project and applying the Write-on effect to that video file.

It was found that applying this effect to the video clip takes planning, practice, and patience. It was decided to share my first look experience with the Write-on effect when applying it to a video clip in order to give the look of the text "John" being handwritten on the video as the video is played back.

Premiere Elements 15 Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit was used for the exploration.

FIRST LOOK WRITE-ON EFFECT

Strategy
Intent is to place Write-on keyframes in a path to give the appearance of a word or words being handwritten (character by character) across the Timeline video being played back. Either of the following two approaches should be considered.

A. Create a Write-on Guide in Photoshop Elements 15. See Figure 1 details.
Figure 1. Write-On Guide Created in Photoshop Elements 15 As PNG File Using New Document (Transparent)/Brush Tool (To Write Out John)/Line Tool (To Place Arrows-Arrowhead At End Of Each Arrow).
In this approach, the yellow dot seen in the Figure 1 png is the start of the path that travels progressively to form J (in this example) and then the rest of the characters of the word (in this case "John"). In this scenario, the png is just a guide. All Write-on keyframes are applied to the selected video as will be described in the suggested workflow section. The Write-on guide is deleted afterward.

B. Just use a pen or pencil to hand-write the word or words on a piece of paper, noting the path that the pen or pencil travels in using for handwriting the word(s). Draw arrows to indicate the path that the pen or pencil travels. Then refer to that flow path on the paper to remind yourself about the order and flow path of the Write-on keyframes being applied.

Write-On Effect

Strategy A was used, and the following was obtained as a first try which needs a lot more work and/or editing.

 Figure 2. 640 x 480 WMV Video Displaying Premiere Elements 15 Video Write-On Effect.

The final Premiere Elements 15 Expert workspace details for this work can be seen in Figure 3.
Figure 3. Premiere Elements 15 Expert Workspace For Write-On Effect Test. Features Pointed To With Red Circles Include: "Write-On" Panel Name And Toggle Animation At Far Right On That Panel, Show/Hide Keyframe Controls At Top Right, FX Effects And FX With Pencil In Right Vertical Panel.
Basics

Step 1.
Video on Video Track 1 and Write-on guide on Video Track 2. Followed by Write-on effect applied to video. For Premiere Elements 15, see fx Effects/Video/Generate/Write-On.

Step 2.
In the opened Write-on Panel set the Color and Brush Size. Important - Remember to have the video selected and click once on the word Write-on in the Write-on panel in order to visualize the circled X and subsequent keyframes. With the circled X over the initial brush dot, move the brush dot to start of the handwriting. (Subsequently that brush dot will be extended with keyframes/movements to progressively form the handwritten word.) Then
  • Select the Toggle Animation icon
  • With the right arrow key, move the Timeline Indicator 5 frames (or use Shift + right arrow if that is working or just tap the right arrow 5 times).
  • With the mouse cursor move the circled dot with the X to the next position along the prescribed flow path.
  • Then move the Timeline Indicator 5 frames and move the dot with the X to the next position along the prescribed path. Continue in this pattern.
  •  Keyframes can be adjusted along the way or afterward using the handles of a keyframe.
  • Also to be explored are the options under Paint Style in the Write-on effect: On Original Image (seen in Figure 3), On Transparency, or Reveal Original Image (video shows through the body of the text). At the end, make sure that the keyframe** for each point is set accordingly.
COMMENTARY

More work needs to be done including use of interpolation methods for improving the handwriting movements. As mentioned previously here, this blog post offers a first look.

*I do not use Mac computer and consequently do not have access to Premiere Elements Mac versions.
**It is assumed that the user will have a basic understanding of Premiere Elements keyframing.

PE15: Haze Removal Video Effect

INTRODUCTION

In Premiere Elements 15, Adobe introduces a "Haze Removal video effect" targeted at removing "haze, fog, and smog" in videos (in particular videos of landscapes). The Adobe document on this effect can be found HERE.

ISSUE

The Adobe document pointed to mentions only "video" source in its details. Is this a video only effect? Can the Haze Removal video effect apply to stills as well as videos? Does use of the Haze Removal video effect offer any advantages over the use of the Adjust/Lighting feature?

Under the "More" button, the sliders are all found set to 0.0. Then custom settings used were Brightness = 3; Contrast = 19; Exposure = -7; Black = 31; White = 0.0. This feature also has Auto Levels, Auto Contrast, and Auto Fix options which were not used in the example. Lighting has a Reset option at the bottom left of its panel. See Figure 7.

Figure 7. Adjustments/Lighting/"More" Slider Settings For Figure 4 Result. Lighting Panel Widened Horizontally So That Black And White Headers Were Visible At The Same Time As For the Brightness, Contrast, And Exposure Headers.

Lighting Panel Settings Using Buttons....
Brightness, Contrast, Exposure each has 9 setting buttons (100, 80, 60, 40, 20, -20, -40, -70, and -100). Black and White each have 9 setting buttons (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90). The graphic in each header's buttons offers a relative view of effect resulting from choice of a particular button.
Lighting Panel Settings Using Sliders...
Each header has slider setting under "More" option. (Note relationship of button and slider settings...for example, if the Brightness, Contrast, or Exposure button for 60 is selected, the "More" slider will be set at 60.) The Black and White headers typically are not visible unless the Lighting panel is expanded horizontally or the next/previous arrow at the right and left of the headers is used to move Black and White into the visible area. The Lighting Panel has a "More" or "Less" viewing option. Access to the sliders is by selecting the More option at the bottom right of the Lighting panel.

Followed By Attempted Image Improvement Using
Adjust/Lighting (With Custom Settings For Brightness, Contrast, Exposure, Black, White)

After the Haze Removal Effect was customized to maximum setting 1.00, the Adjust/Lighting was applied to that same photo. In this case, the Adjust/Lighting sliders were custom set to Brightness 45. Contrast 21, Exposure 31, Black 32, and White 15.

COMMENTARY

The initial study was done subjecting an unedited hazy jpeg photo to Premiere Elements 15 Haze Removal effect and/or Lighting Adjust features, followed by export of each Timeline jpeg photo using Export & Share/Image/. As a backup check, the 5 Timeline photos (original, Haze Removal effect auto, Haze Removal custom, Adjust/Lighting, Haze Removal effect + Adjust Lighting) were exported as one wmv video using Export & Share/Device/Custom/Windows Media. See Video below.

Custom Premiere Elements 15 export settings for this wmv video included: 1920 x 1080, 29.97 frames per second, square pixels (1.0), 10000 kbps (kilobits per second) VBR, 2 Pass.

The better haze removal results might be expected from use of the Premiere Elements 15 Haze Removal effect (maximum Haze Removal and Sensitivity setting 1.00), followed by use of Adjust Lighting feature as needed for Brightness, Contrast, Exposure, Black, White options. It would appear that the Haze Removal effect can be applied to Timeline video as well as jpeg photo. More results from more video/photo source media need to be looked at. Work in progress.

PE: Program Registration

INTRODUCTION

Premiere Elements program "registration" is not the same as "activation". The Adobe document on reasons for registering an Adobe product can be found HERE. With many Premiere Elements versions, registration is done automatically as part of the program's installation/activation. Once the program is registered, the user is expected to find a listing for the registered program under Plans & Products/Products/View Your Products in the user's Adobe account which is accessed at the Adobe web site.

If for some reason registration is not done at installation/activation, the program can still be run in the absence of registration. And, if registration is wanted after program installation/activation, the opened project offers a route to registration via its Help Menu. See*

Premiere Elements 4, 7, 8.0/8.0.1
Help Menu/"Registration"

Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1, 10, 11, 12.0/12.1
Help Menu/"Complete/Update Adobe ID Profile"

Premiere Elements 13.0/13.1, 14.0/14.1, 15
Help Menu/"Manage My Account"

ISSUE

In the case of Premiere Elements 4, "Registration" was found active in its Help Menu, but its use gave the error message "Registration - Connection Failure". In the cases of Premiere Elements 7 and  8.0/8.0.1, "Registration" was grayed out in the Help Menu. It was decided to offer a path to Premiere Elements registration at the Adobe web site. Premiere Elements 7 was used for the test case.

SOLUTION**

The following should work for all versions of Premiere Elements; however, the only test case here was using Premiere Elements 7.

1. Go to your Adobe account at the Adobe web site http://www.adobe.com and sign in with your Adobe ID and Password (See top right of the Adobe web site page that opens.)

2. After entering your Adobe ID and Password, a page should open with the headers of Overview, Plans & Products,  Account, Security & Privacy, Communication, and Profile. Select Plans & Products.

3. In the Plans & Products section, go to the right side of the page to Products/View Your Products, and select View Your Products.

4. At the bottom of the list of your already registered products, there should be a "Register an older product" section which asks for the serial number of your product that you want to register. After the serial number has been entered in the space provided, press the Enter key on the computer's keyboard. The result should be the name of your product (in this case Adobe Premiere Elements 7) now appearing in the list of your registered products.
(Side note: Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 could also be registered here using its specific serial number.)

COMMENTARY

Also of interest may be the Adobe document describing transferring license of Adobe product. See HERE.

_________________________________________________________________________________
*These Help Menu/options (if they are found in a working state) should be opening to the Adobe web site page cited in SOLUTION.

PE15: Video Collage Feature (NEW)

INTRODUCTION

In Premiere Elements 15 Adobe introduces a Video Collage feature in its Expert and Quick workspaces. Video Collage can be composed of photos and/or video and is accessed under the Create header at the top right of the workspace. The Adobe Premiere Elements Help Video Collage document appears to be comprehensive in details and should be referred to HERE.

In spite of the comprehensive nature of the Adobe document on Video Collage, it was decided to give Premiere Elements 15's new Video Collage feature a first hand look and post the observations.

The feature works from an Adobe designed template into which the user can insert videos and/or photos. There are 13 templates to select from in the Video Collage workspace. In the Video Collage workspace
  • Editing options for selected photo inserts in the template include switching insert from space to space, scaling, and trashing.
  • Editing options for selected video inserts in the template include switching insert from space to space, Trim, disabling video's audio , and trashing.
  • Video Collage workspace options applicable to the selected video as well as photo inserts include choice of template, Playback Settings, and Music (no background music or one of the Music Scores available in the Video Collage workspace.
  • After the Video Collage workspace's Export to Timeline is used, the Video Collage presents in the Expert workspace's Timeline with the Video Collage displaying a video and a audio components linked on Video Track 1/Audio Track 1 (this is the case whether or not the Video Collage was created with music.
There are 5 categories of templates, each named according to how many spaces for inserts there are available in the template. The different template designs for each of the 5 categories include

Grid 3
template with Scale and Slide In Effect
template with Slide In Effect
template with Rotate Effect

Grid 4

template with Slide In from Corner Effect

Grid 5
template with Scale and Slide In Effect
template with Scale Effect
template with Rotate

Grid 6
template with Slide In

Grid 7
template with Curve and Settle Effect

Miscellaneous Details That Caught Attention
  • The final result reflects bordered images in the collage rather than a blending of the individual   images in the collage.
  • To avoid problems, insertion of video with different duration should be avoided when Playback Setting = "All Together". In Video Collage workspace see Video Trim editing option and Playback Settings..
  • For those without a Video Collage feature (Premiere Elements earlier than 15), it would appear that most, if not all, of the Video Collage results could be obtained in the Expert workspace  with the appropriate mix of Motion Properties (Scale, Rotate, Position), Opacity Properties, and Video Effects (PiPs).
  • No option was found to "Delete Audio" or "Delete Video" in the pop up menu that results from right clicking any Video Collage exported to the Expert workspace Timeline. However, the pop up menu does include the "Unlink Audio and Video" option.
  • No way was found in the Video Collage workspace to adjust individually duration or pan and zoom effects.
The output of the Video Collage from the Video Collage workspace can be either of the following
  • Export to Timeline
  • Export & Share
Editing possibilities for the Video Collage created in the Video Collage workspace exist only if the user saves the Video Collage in the Video Collage workspace before exiting the Video Collage workspace. This Save is to a file with a vc file extension. To open this closed saved file so that it opens to the Premiere Elements 15 Video Collage workspace, the user can do anyone of the following
  • Expert workspace: File Menu/Open Project
  • Computer Hard Drive: At the file's hard drive location designated by the user, right click just the vc file, select Open With, followed by Adobe Premiere Elements 15
  • Video Collage workspace: File Menu/ Open Video Collage
The Video Collage duration displayed in the Video Collage workspace, Expert workspace, and Export & Share's export to file are still being thought about. Consider. If the image-empty template is outputted from the Video Collage workspace to Expert workspace, the Timeline image-empty Video Collage clip duration presents in the Expert workspace as
  • Grid 3 templates 49 seconds
  • Grid 4 templates 1 minute and four seconds
  • Grid 5 templates 1 minute and nineteen seconds
  • Grid 6 template 1 minute and thirty four seconds
  • Grid 7 template 1 minute and forty nine seconds
However, when all the insert spaces are filled with photos in a template, then the image-filled template exported to the Expert workspace Timeline displays the following duration
  • Grid 3 templates about 22 seconds
  • Grid 4 templates about 28 seconds
  • Grid 5 templates about 34 seconds
  • Grid 6 template about 40 seconds
  • Grid 7 template about 46 seconds
For all these templates in the Video Collage workspace, 9 seconds/photo inserted is consistently subtracted from empty template duration. Also, while all this exists, the photo in each template appears with duration label of 6 seconds. On the other hand, inserted video appears with duration label consistent with the duration of the original video duration. In contrast, variable seconds/video inserted is added to the empty template duration. Whatever the case, the data here should inform the user as to what to expect for Expert workspace Timeline Video Collage duration associated with choice of template.

OBSERVATIONS

Using Grid 7
With Curve And Settle Effect (Playback Set For "One After Another")

A jpeg photo in each of the 7 spaces in this template. Music Score "Is This Love" applied in Video Collage workspace.Video Collage workspace Output = Export & Share/Devices/Custom/Advanced Settings for H.264 1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 fps, bitrate target = 2 Mbps, audio = AAC 48000 Hz/160 kbps/Stereo.

The "Curve And Settle Effect" design of this template starts with just center photo going from off-screen to on-screen position, followed by other photos going from off-screen to on-screen in order of bottom left and upper right photos, then upper left and bottom right photos, and, then completing with photos going from off-screen to on-screen for center left column and center right column. After the photos are placed, each (one after another) pans and zooms slightly in the order of upper left, center left column, bottom left, center, upper right, center left column, bottom right.

COMMENTARY

The Premiere Elements 15 new Video Collage feature appears to be a convenience feature to produce a photo and/or video collage.

Yet, still trying to consider the "Previewing" aspects of Video Collage in the Video Collage workspace as well as in the Expert workspace Timeline.

When the created Video Collage (no rendering applied in the Video Collage workspace) was outputted to the Expert workspace Timeline, the Video Collage presented immediately on the Timeline Video Track 1/Audio Track 1, but the display of content in the Timeline thumbnails and monitor were blank for a considerable amound of time before the images displayed in either place. And, the Timeline Video Collage had an orange line over it indicating the need for Timeline rendering..

The Video Collage workspace has a preview feature that includes a rendering option. The Preview there did not seem as demanding for a render before Preview in order to get a Preview in the Video Collage workspace. However, when the Video Collage was rendered in the Video Collage workspace  using its Preview's rendering option and then exported to the Expert workspace Timeline, the Timeline Video Collage display issues were minimal to non existent even with the render indicator line orange. Yet to be considered is the Video Collage previewing in the Video Collage and Expert workspaces and whether or not rendering in either place is necessary (must do option) to be able to work with the Video Collage creation.

When in the Quick workspace, the Video Collage output choice is still listed as Export to Timeline or Export & Share. But, in the Quick's Export to Timeline situation, Export to Timeline puts the whole created Video Collage (video/photo/audio components) from Video Collage workspace to one space in the Quick workspace Filmstrip "video clips/photos" line.

Work in progress.
